Strange Holidays In February

Updated on May 23, 2016

Anna is a writer who wears many other hats and has a wealth of experience that she draws from, sometimes funny, sometimes serious.

It's Been a While

It really has been a while since I tackled one of these. I have several other hubs covering strange holidays. My plan is to cover every month, and so far, I have been slacking quite a lot. I guess life gets in the way sometimes. But, I am back at it again. February is so much more than just Valentine's Day and Black History Month, though, those are important. For those that aren't a fan of Valentine's Day, maybe you can find something else to celebrate this month. I do hope you get as much enjoyment out of reading these as I do researching and writing them. It always amuses me what I find.

February Is A Month For...

Just like every other month, there are some fun and interesting monthly observances that I have found for the month of February. Some of these are rather silly, but of course, that makes them so much more fun.

  • Pull Your Sofa Off The Wall Month: An interior decorator's dream month! I can't tell you the number of shows I have seen where they make remarks about people just pushing furniture up against a wall. Try out some different furniture arrangements. Sometimes, floating a couch in the middle of the room, with a nice sofa table behind it, can really make a statement in a room, and provide natural divisions between areas.
  • Return Carts to the Supermarket Month: I know...it's an inconvenience. But, now supermarkets and discount stores even offer these handy little cart corrals to drop your cart off at so you don't have to walk all the way back to the store. Yet, so many people just leave their carts right near their car. This causes countless amounts of damage to cars every year. So, at the very least, for this month, please remember to return your cart to the store, or a cart corral if the store is "too far".
  • National Blah Buster Month: As winter drags on, the winter blahs can affect even the most chipper spirit. Do something this month to bust those blahs! Throw a Groundhog Day party, complete with a constantly repeating version of the movie, or a party soundtrack which consists of only one song. Of course that song is "I Got You, Babe", by Sonny and Cher. What else would it be? If that isn't enough to bust your blahs, it will make every day after that seem wonderful in comparison.
  • Adopt a Rescued Rabbit: I had no idea there were such a thing. Is there a shelter for rescued rabbits? Where would you find such a thing? Maybe rescue your own rabbit. You can usually see them early in the morning, hopping around your yard, or along the side of the road. After you rescue the rabbit, what then? I have no idea. Keep it as a pet, make soup, or do whatever you want with it. I suggest some mittens...kidding, PETA!!!
  • Fabulous Florida Strawberry Month: This is a holiday near and dear to my heart! I love strawberries, and I love Florida! Florida grows some of the most wonderful strawberries in the world. Usually, strawberries are associated with summer, but when you live in Florida, it almost always feels like summer. Visions of smoothies, strawberry shortcake and so many other wonderful things are floating through my head right now. You could always come down to Plant City, Florida, and celebrate at the annual Strawberry Festival. They have great entertainment, and of course, strawberries!!
  • Jobs In Golf Month: Watch out Tiger Woods; or maybe not. What job could I possibly do in golf? I have no idea. I don't have a strong enough back to be a caddie. Maybe I could sell drinks on the course. Just what we need, more drunk people driving around in golf carts. Maybe I will just stick to writing.
  • Marijuana Awareness Month: I would have though this holiday would be in April. No reason...really...whatever. Stoners everywhere are rejoicing that they get a whole month to celebrate the wonders of weed. Are you aware of marijuana? You should be. Your kids are probably out somewhere smoking it right now.
  • Spunky Old Broads Month: Finally, my grandma gets her own month!! It's about time the world recognized how great I already knew she was! Kidding aside, spunky old broads are absolutely wonderful!! I hope I fall into this category when I get old! Channel your inner Betty White this month, and be your spunky self!

What Are We Doing This Week?

February does not disappoint when it comes to strange and silly weekly observances. Some seem to draw off the negative feelings surrounding Valentine's Day, while others are just a little strange. I hope you find something to celebrate in this collection of fun and silly week long observances.

  • International Snow Sculpting Week (1-5): I can't partake in the particular celebration, but then, I am not a fan of spending hours outside, sculpting snow. I could make a sandcastle instead. I have actually seen some impressive snow sculptures over the years. I saw a particularly beautiful angel sculpture a few years ago up in Illinois. For those that are so inclined, take some time this week, and make a snow sculpture.
  • Dump Your Significant Jerk Week (5-11): Are you dating a person that could fit this category? Maybe now is the time to dump that jerk. Right before Valentine's Day. Ouch!! So what if you won't get a gift this year, it's not like he was really going to get you anything anyway, right? Maybe you can meet a decent guy in enough time to have a date for the night. Or, spend some time with some single girlfriends, instead. At least you know they won't leave you paying for the entire check.
  • Just Say No to Powerpoint Week (5-11): Apparently someone has some issues with Powerpoint. I am not sure why. What did Powerpoint ever do to you? It serves its purpose. I guess someone out there really doesn't like the program. Fine for them, I guess. I don't think it deserves an entire week of animosity, though.
  • Love Makes The World Go Round, But Laughter Keeps Us From Getting Dizzy Week (8-14): The longest weekly observance falls in the shortest month. Go figure. Love really does make the world go round, but if truth be told, I have laughed so hard that it made me dizzy, so I don't know how true this really is.
  • Jell-O Week (12-18): YAY!!! I love Jell-O! Especially when that Jell-O contains alcohol! I know, Bill Cosby would not approve. Pudding Pops and Jell-O Jigglers will overflow this week, and I couldn't be happier. There are so many wonderful things you can do with Jell-O. It can be put in cakes, parfaits, and so many other things. And, remember, there's always room for Jell-O.
  • Love A Mench Week (12-18): What is a mench? For those who don't understand Yiddish, a mench is a good person, or a person of honor and integrity. So, this seems easy enough, right? Loving a good person doesn't seem like a really hard thing to do. It hardly deserves a whole week, but then, all good people deserve to know that they are loved.
  • Great Backyard Bird Count Week (17-20): This is something that would be rather easy for me. I see so many birds in my backyard, it's almost as if I have an aviary out there. This might be a little harder for those that live in colder climates, but then, if the groundhog didn't see his shadow, spring is right around the corner, so maybe those first robins of spring are already starting to arrive, Drag out your binoculars and have a look.
  • National Pancake Week (19-25): Mmmm...pancakes! Actually, I prefer french toast, but hey, I'll eat pancakes this week. Those heaping stacks of steamy goodness, coated in butter and drenched in sticky, sweet syrup deserve some recognition! They have been a staple of childhood breakfasts for decades, and I don't see them going anywhere any time soon, except maybe into my stomach!
  • Texas Cowboy Poetry Week (24-26): Not fair! This isn't even a whole week; it's only three days! What gives? I guess Texas cowboy poets are harder to come by these days. Maybe that's why they don't get a whole week. Admit it, do you actually know any cowboy poets? And, no, George Strait doesn't really count. Though I do love his music. OK, so he does count. Pull out your George Strait music, and crank it up!

A Daily Dose Of Strange

I have managed to find some strange little holidays and observances for most of the days in February. There are a few days that seem to lack any interesting events, but maybe we can make up some of our own. I am certainly open to suggestions! Take a look at these fun and interesting days, and celebrate something different every day this month! Enjoy!

  • 1st: Working Naked Day: I'm not so sure about this one...I wouldn't really want to go, to say a hospital, and find the entire medical staff working naked. The same goes for any restaurant, either. That has to be some sort of health code violation. For those of us that work at home, though, I fully plan on taking advantage of this day!! Will anyone know I am typing naked? I guess now they will.
  • 1st: Hula In The Coola Day: Apparently, this is a holiday meant to send you to the emergency room with hypothermia. The holiday stems from northerners who were sick and tired of the winter blahs, and decided to don some grass skirts, head outside and do the Hula. I grew up in Illinois, and the thought of wearing nothing but a grass skirt and a coconut bra and going outside scares the crap out of me. Do this at your own risk!
  • 1st: Car Insurance Day: Today is the day to re-evaluate your car insurance! Now, doesn't that sound like fun? No, I didn't really think so. The only person excited about today would have to be Flo, the Progressive Insurance lady. I love those commercials! She cracks me up!
  • 1st: G. I. Joe Day: I'm a girl; I didn't play with G. I. Joe. I played with Barbie. I know, playing into gender stereotypes. I guess G. I. Joe has his merits. It was the only doll that was socially acceptable for boys to play with. And, yes, they are dolls. Call them action figures all you want. They are the same size as Barbies, you can dress them, and they came with accessories...they are dolls.
  • 2nd: Crepe Day: We have pancake week in February, so why not crepe day? Those light and fluffy French cousins to the pancake. I love crepes!! Especially with strawberries and powdered sugar. So yummy...now if only I knew how to make crepes. Does anyone have a good recipe? I bet I could find one somewhere. Mmmm...now I want crepes.
  • 2nd: Marmot Day: What the heck is a marmot? And, why do they have their own day? A marmot is kind of like a large ground squirrel. They are native to Alaska. Alaska adopted Marmot Day as a replacement for Groundhog Day. Notice how they are on the same day? Yep. I guess they don't have groundhogs in Alaska. Imagine if the Bill Murray movie had been called Marmot Day, and he had been sent to Alaska instead of Pennsylvania (actually, it was filmed in Illinois, but who cares?).
  • 2nd: Sled Dog Day: Is this another Alaska holiday?? I have no idea. It would almost have to be, either that or Canadian. I don't see too many sled dogs down in Florida. The occasional person may have a Huskie, but then, you always feel bad for that animal because it's so warm down here. Hey, maybe you can start your own sled dog team in your town. It would certainly help with the gas prices going up. Swipe some dogs from your neighborhood, or head to the local shelter. Once you have the dogs, all you need to do is get a sled, some ropes and you are good to go. You could even charge money to give people rides. Kind of like a sled taxi.
  • 3rd: The Day The Music Died: We have all heard the song, American Pie, by Don McLean. It is a sad song about the day that Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper died in a plane crash. Three legends of early rock and roll all tragically killed at once. So, this holiday isn't very funny, but I still thought it was interesting. Pay tribute to these legends. Play some of their iconic music, on vinyl, if you have it, and remember when things were simpler, when life was sweet, and the only thing you had to worry about was if your special guy was gonna ask you to the Homecoming Dance.
  • 3rd: Bubble Gum Day: Now, for something completely different! Bubble gum...I have such fond memories of chomping and blowing bubbles, and driving my mother nuts. I would blow and blow, trying to make the biggest bubble possible. Sometimes I made a rather sticky mess. Once, I had to have my hair chopped off because I got a large amount of gum stuck in it. I don't chew bubble gum all that much anymore, I leave that up to my daughter, now. She has taken on the same challenges that I tackled when I was a kid; how to blow the biggest bubble possible. Thankfully, I haven't had to cut her hair...yet.
  • 3rd: Wear Red Day: OK...red, sure, why not? I like red as much as the next person, but do I really have to have someone telling me what color to wear on a certain day? I think I am capable of making that choice for myself. So, what to wear today??? Hmmm...I think I will go for this red sweater. Darn! I swear I made this choice all on my own. You can't tell me what to do!
  • 4th: Liberace Day: Ah, yes...that flamboyant piano player, Liberace! Sequins and sparkles float through my head just thinking about him. Break out your Bedazzler, some gold paint, your piano and a suit, and go to town. I wonder how long it would take to put rhinestones on an entire suit...probably more than just one day. Maybe we should give him a whole week.
  • 4th: Quacker Day: Ducks...I guess...what else could it be? I know...duck shaped crackers. Is there such a thing? I have no idea. if not, there should be! I think I will make some. I could make a fortune...then again, maybe not...
  • 4th: Ice Cream For Breakfast Day: Kids everywhere are jumping up and down over this holiday! Imagine your kids after eating ice cream for breakfast. Scary, isn't it? I hope this day falls on a school day. Early February and eating ice cream for breakfast seems a little strange. Most places, it's kind of cold this time of year. Though I did see the ice cream truck drive through my neighborhood in the middle of January, but then, I live in Florida. Maybe you can harness that energy, and get the kids to shovel the driveway!
  • 5th: Move Hollywood and Broadway to Lebanon, PA Day: Another long holiday title on such a short month. I don't really think Lebanon, PA could handle all of the craziness of both Hollywood and Broadway. Let's move Broadway first, and see how it goes.
  • 5th: Weatherman's (Weatherperson's) Day: What other job is there where you can be wrong every single day, and still keep your job? Imagine if every job were that way. Not a pleasant thought. I kid, of course. These days, people who deal with the weather have to have actual training, and knowledge, not just look pretty in front of the weather map.
  • 5th: World Nutella Day: Yum! Nutella is so delicious!! I discovered this tasty spread a few years ago, and I fell in love with it, which is strange. I don't like hazelnut. It is made from hazelnuts with a bit of cocoa. It is great on toast! If you haven't tried it, make today the day, and treat yourself to some delicious Nutella!
  • 5th: Dump Your Significant Jerk Day: This day signifies the start of "Dump Your Significant Jerk Week". Makes sense. Time to kick that loser to the curb once and for all. Trust me, you will thank yourself later. All he ever does is complain about you, and leave his dirty socks all over the place, anyway.
  • 7th: Wave All Your Fingers at Your Neighbors Day: Umm...OK. Wave all your fingers at your neighbors? I guess it beats waving just one. I actually know my neighbors, and even like a few of them. I guess I could head out and give them a wave. Take some time today to give a wave to your next door neighbor. Just remember to wave all of your fingers, not just one.
  • 7th: Man Day: Don't men already have a day? Aside from Father's Day, they have every Sunday, or any day sports happens to be on the television. I guess, what's one more day? Is it just a coincidence that Man Day happens to fall exactly one week before Valentine's Day?
  • 8th: Laugh and Get Rich Day: If I could get rich just by laughing, I would be a very rich woman already. I really think it should be the other way around; get rich and then laugh! I would laugh if I got rich. Then, I would go shopping. Let's see how long it takes me to get rich just by laughing. I don't see this going well.
  • 8th: Opera Day: This is definitely not Man Day! Not a day for me, either. I must admit, I am not a huge fan of opera. If you are a fan of opera, then maybe today would be the day to take it an opera. I wonder if a rock opera counts...that might be fun. I haven't seen "Tommy" in a while.
  • 8th: Fly a Kite Day: Who's idea was this? In the beginning of February? Fly a kite? Are you serious? I don't think so! You won't see me out there. Maybe if you live in the Southern Hemisphere, where it's summer, that might be a good idea, but not in the middle of winter. Though, the wind might be good for it, who knows...
  • 9th: Read in the Bathtub Day: I love to do this! I love reading in the bathtub. I just wish I still had a bathtub. I could sit in the tub for hours, reading and relaxing, only getting out once the water was too cold to bear sitting in there anymore. For all you like-minded individuals, take a day to relax in the tub with a good book. There are a lot of great books out there, and I am sure you have a few that you have been meaning to read.
  • 9th: Toothache Day: Now, this day doesn't sound like any fun at all!! Just skip this day, shall we? Who wants to celebrate a toothache, except for maybe a dentist? Toothaches are terrible! There is no pain that bad, and I have had two kids. I would rather go through childbirth again than have a toothache.
  • 9th: Extraterrestrial Visitor Day: That might explain the toothache; alien implants in our teeth. Hmm...maybe not. If you haven't seen the movie, ET, today would be the day to do it. If you have, watch it again. Or catch up on some "Ancient Aliens". That show is a bit silly, but sometimes interesting. If you have been "visited", feel free to share your story with the world today.
  • 10th: Plimsoll Day: What is Plimsoll Day? I asked the same question. I had no idea. Plimsoll Day is to honor Samuel Plimsoll. OK, so who is that? He was a coal merchant, turned reformer who worked to reform the shipping industry in England in the late 1800's. Yep, that's it.
  • 11th: White T-Shirt Day: A whole day to honor the white T-shirt? Who came up with this? Fruit of the Loom? Probably, actually. Today is the day to don your white t-shirts and relax. Let's hope your boss doesn't mind. At the very least, you can wear it under your suit. Or take the day off and relax around the house in your classic white t-shirt. There is even a song honoring the white t-shirt.
  • 11th: Don't Cry Over Spilt Milk Day: Umm...I see a white theme going on today. So, if you spill milk today, no need to cry, though who would really cry over spilling milk? I know, I know...not really about milk, but who cares?
  • 11th: Be Electrific Day: Not just electric, not just terrific, but electrific! Electric and terrific. I am not sure what it means to be electrific, but I guess take what you want from it! Whether you choose to be terrifically electric, or electrifically terrific, I guess that is entirely up to you.
  • 12th: Darwin Day: Yay for Charles Darwin! I guess...maybe you should hop on a ship, or a plane, and head to the Galapagos Islands and check out some turtles. Or read some of his works, like The Origin of Species, or The Descent of Man.
  • 12th: Paul Bunyan Day: A whole day devoted to an obvious mythical figure. The giant of a man, along with his big blue ox are a part of the American folklore. There are several statues of Paul. One is in Portland, Oregon, as well as one in Bangor, Maine. There is another, this time with Babe, in Bemidji, Minnesota. I could go on and on...let's just say there are a lot.
  • 13th: Get a Different Name Day: Sounds easy enough, right? Not really. It is difficult to get your name changed. There is a lot of paperwork involved, and it usually costs money. Even if your name change is a result of getting married, that in itself is expensive. Maybe just give yourself a pen name. That doesn't involve any work. Just think up a great name, and go with it.
  • 13th: Madly In Love With Me Day: Well, who wouldn't be? I am irresistible! I don't blame you for being madly in love with me. I'm just kidding, of course. But, today is the day to be madly in love with me, so maybe I'm not kidding. Even if it's only for one day.
  • 13th: Clean Out Your Computer Day: You should probably do this a little more often than once a year. If you haven't cleaned out your computer in a while, today would be the day to do it. And, I don't just mean the files, either. When was the last time you cleaned out the keyboard? I know you eat at your desk. Your computer won't work well if it's filthy and dusty. Give it a good cleaning, both inside and out.
  • 14th: Extraterrestrial Culture Day: What, exactly, is extraterrestrial culture? I will leave that up to you. After all, I have never met an E.T., and most people haven't either. So, I guess it's pretty much up to you. Dress up like and alien, don a foil hat, or whatever you feel like doing today. Check out a lame sci-fi movie, or head to a convention, if you can bear to brave one of those things.
  • 14th: Ferris Wheel Day: I love a good Ferris wheel!! There is a nice one at Navy Pier, in Chicago. I also hear there is a large one in London, though I have never been. Today is also Valentine's Day, so maybe take your love on a ride on a Ferris wheel, and enjoy the view from up top.
  • 14th: Pet Theft Awareness Day: Who steals someone's pet? That is just terrible! I guess we are all aware of it now, aren't we? People steal pets. Who these people are, I don't know. I know of a pet they can steal, though. My roommate has a rather annoying bird that I would be happy to have stolen from my house, as long as they left my stuff alone, of course.
  • 14th: Library Lovers Day: Show your love for your local library this Valentine's Day! These days, libraries are a lot more empty than they used to be. The internet and hand-held e-readers have left libraries rather abandoned. There is still a lot to be said for the library, though. They offer reading programs for children, activities, and still are a great resource for books.
  • 14th: National Call In Single Day: If you have used up all of your sick days, today is the day to call in single. You don't really want to be there when all those non-single women get their bouquets of flowers, anyway. It's rather depressing. Me, I hate getting flowers. They die. I prefer jewelry.
  • 14th: Quirky Alone Day: Yep, another anti-valentine's day holiday. If you are alone, do something quirky and fun today. Dress up, go out, and be someone else for the night. Maybe a pirate, or pretend you are from another country. Maybe stay in and watch some fun and quirky movies.
  • 15th: Susan B. Anthony Day: Most people don't know who Susan B. Anthony is, except for the fact that she was on a dollar coin that failed, mostly due to the fact that it was the same size as a quarter. Susan B. Anthony was a prominent figure is winning the right to vote for women. So, all you women out there, today is the day to thank Susan B. Anthony for the right to vote.
  • 15th: National Gum Drop Day: I still think of the game Candy Land every time I think of gumdrops. I don't know why it has stuck with me like that, but it has. I can still remember playing when I was a kid, heading around the board, past Gumdrop Mountain. Enjoy some gumdrops today, or play some Candy Land with your kids. Share the fun game from your childhood with your own children.
  • 16th: Innovation Day: Whether you choose to be innovative, yourself, or if you choose to honor the innovation of others, today is the day to do it. There have been numerous innovators over centuries of human history. Try discovering something you didn't know, or discovering where some of those amazing innovations came from.
  • 17th: My Way Day: 'Old Blue Eyes' sang it best. I am talking about the song, of course. It's one of my favorites. Make everything about today, your way. Head to Burger King, and "have it your way", sing a little Sinatra, or do whatever you want. But remember, do it your way...or is that my way?
  • 17th: World Human Spirit Day: The human spirit is an amazing thing, to be sure. Think of all the incredible things we have managed to accomplish, to learn, to discover, and to invent. The human spirit may be hard at times, but it is never weak. We wouldn't have survived this long if it were.
  • 18th: Thumb Appreciation Day: Ah...where would we be without our thumbs? That is a sad prospect to consider. We use our thumbs in just about everything we do. So, as you go about your day, take time to notice how useful your thumbs are. Learn to appreciate them. They deserve our respect. Oh, and if you are going to do some carpentry, try not to hit your poor thumb with the hammer.
  • 18th: Battery Day: Batteries are so vital to everything we do, these days. What doesn't have a battery? The computer I type on right now has a battery, as does my watch, alarm clock, smoke detector, car, camera, cell phone, etc. Unfortunately, quite often, batteries are not included. Think back to Christmas Day, and your children are opening all those nifty electronic gadgets...all of which need batteries...
  • 18th: Cow Milked While Flying In An Airplane Day: And the award for the strangest holiday this month goes to...today!!! I really don't even know what to say to this one. Is this really how the cow jumped over the moon? Was it in an airplane? Who would milk a cow in an airplane?
  • 18th: Pluto Day: Poor Pluto. When I was a kid, it was still a planet. I guess Pluto just isn't that special anymore. I guess it's special enough to get it's own day, but not special enough to be a planet. So, what do they use to remember the planets now? When I was a kid, it was "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas". Guess they have to change it now...
  • 19th: Chocolate Mint Day: There are so many chocolate days scattered throughout the year. I am surprised that there wasn't one on the 14th. Today is another. This one devoted to mint chocolate...yummy!! York Peppermint Patties are some of my favorites! Chocolate and mint are two things that go so well together.
  • 20th: Love Your Pet Day: Some people take this day too seriously. Some people treat their pets like people, and this includes bringing them to the grocery store. I find this rather gross. Anyway, off subject. Show your pet some love today. Bring your cat a nice treat, or take your dog for a long walk, as long as that walk isn't to the grocery store. I even knew a person who took their pet pig to Wal-Mart, and I am not even kidding.
  • 20th: Hoodie Hoo Day: This holiday sounds as if it were created by Adam Sandler. The first thing that popped into my head was his song, "Red Hooded Sweatshirt". That song makes me laugh, what can I say? I love to be silly!! Break out your hoodies, cause I am sure it's cold outside, anyway.
  • 21st: International Pancake Day: And, yes, this holiday is sponsored by IHOP!! Go figure. If you love pancakes, today is the day to indulge. Hopefully, IHOP is honoring this day by having their all-you-can-eat pancake special. So head over to IHOP, and enjoy a stack of yummy pancakes!
  • 22nd: National Margarita Day: Now there is a holiday I can celebrate!!! Whether you head down to Mexico, or blend them up yourself; today is the day to indulge in "that frozen concoction that helps me hang on", to quote the immortal words of Jimmy Buffett.
  • 22nd: World Thinking Day: What would the world be like if more people did this a little more? They have stupid warnings on everything for a reason; for all those people that just don't think. Common sense really isn't that common anymore, so for at least one day, can we all just stop and think? It might actually make the world a better place.
  • 22nd: Inconvenience Yourself Day: Now who would want to do that? Well, I guess if you are going to celebrate today, you could take the long way to work, or hand deliver all the mail you were planning on sending out. I don't really know. Maybe actually call someone instead of just sending a text.
  • 22nd: Single-Tasking Day: So, on top of inconveniencing yourself, you can take a bit of a breather from all your crazy multi-tasking. Take on one task at a time! I know, it sounds strange. It sounds really strange to deal with only one thing at a time. Usually, I am in the middle of doing three or four things at once. I am usually tackling my emails, doing some writing, and talking on the phone, all at the same time.
  • 23rd: Curling Is Cool Day: While being out on the ice for hours is certainly cold, I wouldn't call curling "cool". Sweeping ice with a push broom just doesn't strike me as all that much fun. It's like weird shuffleboard on ice. I don't get it.
  • 23rd: Diesel Engine Day: Diesel fuel is so expensive these days, but the diesel engine does have it's merits. Of course, with the innovation of bio-diesel, it is a lot cleaner than it used to be, as well. Gas up your big truck, and head out on the road today!
  • 23rd: National Chili Day: From one gas to another...kidding! Chili is that wonderful food that is great anytime! Chili cook-offs in the summer, nice, warm bowls of chili in the winter, or sitting around watching football, chili is perfect.
  • 25th: International Sword Swallowers Day: OUCH!! Sounds painful to me! What once used to be a popular side-show attraction is making a comeback in this country. Counter-culture shows are popping up all over the place, with sword swallowers, fire eaters and all sorts of side-show fare...including the less appealing, and often looked down upon, freak show.
  • 25th: Open That Bottle Night: This isn't a day, exactly, but a night! A night to crack open that bottle of wine you have been saving for a special occasion. Why wait? You only live once, and you might as well enjoy it! So, crack open that bottle, and enjoy tonight. If you need a reason, you can celebrate anything you want, even sword swallowers. Better them than me...
  • 26th: Tell A Fairy Tale Day: Fairy tales are everywhere lately. Movie adaptations of Snow White, several television shows about fairy tales. I loved fairy tales growing up, as most girls do. Share some of your favorite fairy tales with your children, or make up your own today.
  • 26th: For Pete's Sake Day: I don't know who this Pete is, but he sure has a lot said for his sake. Today, he even gets a whole day. So, do something for Pete's sake today. If you know someone named Pete, do something for him, I guess.
  • 26th: National Personal Chef's Day: I wish I had one of these! I could really use a personal chef! That would be wonderful. If you have a personal chef, be sure to honor them today. If you are a personal chef, let your customers know that it is your special day. Maybe take the day off, and enjoy having someone else cook for you.
  • 26th: Levi Strauss Day: Where would we be without Levi Strauss? I always wear jeans and I can't imagine a world without them. A great pair of Levi's is a wonderful thing to have. So break out your jeans, and honor the great Levi Strauss today.
  • 27th: Punch The Clock Day: The days of actually having to punch in are almost long gone. These days, everything is electronic. At my last job, I swiped my badge at the start and end of my shift. Though there have been times when I have wanted to actually punch a clock, but that is a different thing all together.
  • 27th: Orthodox Green Monday: I am not even sure what this means. What does it mean to be orthodox green? Is it some sort of super dedicated environmentalist, or is it some sort or religious thing? I had no idea. Apparently, it is the first Monday of Lent. Why is it green, though? Not sure.
  • 28th: Floral Design Day: I love flowers, and have actually gotten pretty good at flower arranging. Today would be a good day to take a class in floral design, or even just get a lovely bouquet of flowers for someone special. Floral design is not as easy as it looks, and it deserves a little recognition.
  • 28th: National Tooth Fairy Day: The tooth fairy does not get the attention she (or he, if you go by the movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) deserves. She works tirelessly, all through the night, collecting teeth and giving out money. And with inflation and higher cost of living, she shells out a lot more money than she used to. I used to get a quarter for a tooth. My daughter's last tooth, the tooth fairy left her $2.00!!
  • 28th: Public Sleeping Day: There aren't many places where sleeping in public is really socially acceptable, so be careful with this one. I suggest the beach, or maybe a library. Falling asleep inside a department store might get you into a little bit of trouble, and it just isn't safe to fall asleep on public transportation these days. Though, you can still get a little sleep on an airplane if you bring a sleep mask and some ear plugs.
  • 29th (Leap Year): Bachelor's Day: Apparently, bachelors have to wait four years to get a day to themselves, or go on reality television. Honor the bachelor in your life with a night out, because more than likely, he could use it. Or sit down to a marathon of the silly reality show of the same name.
  • 29th (Leap Year): National Surf and Turf Day: Who doesn't love a little surf and turf? Steak and lobster is always a wonderful dinner! Treat yourself, or your loved one, to a night out for a little treat of surf and turf. If they are a vegetarian, that might be a little harder to do, but get creative with it.
