Stephen King First Editions: How to Recognize One

Stephen King is a very recognizable name in the genre of horror fiction. Though, not all of his books fall into this category. His writing is very popular, and his books are in high demand. First editions are sought after by collectors, and avid fans. Some are more valuable than others, and some are very hard to find! But, how do you tell if that book you have is a first edition? In the more recent published books of his, it is a little easier, but for his older works, it can be a bit difficult. I will make it all easier for you! I will go book by book and give you all the information you need to identify Stephen King first editions. This will be updated as new books are released.

If you find you have a first edition, and are curious about the value, there are numerous places you can go to find out the value. Most bookstores that deal in rare books, collectible books, and that sort of thing, should be able to appraise the book for you. If you choose to sell it, they may also be willing to either buy it from you, or sell it on consignment.

Terms Defined

There are a lot of terms in here that some of you may not be familiar with. I will include pictures for reference, as well as a description. This guide is for trade editions only. Limited editions are sometimes published before or after the trade edition, and do not effect it's value. Obviously, limited editions are far more valuable, and I may cover these in the future.

Trim Size

Trim size is basically the dimensions of the book itself. This information is provided because often, Book Club editions of books tend to be smaller than the original. If you have a book that seems smaller than others, it very well may be a book club edition. "Book Club Edition" will usually be found on the inside of the dust jacket.

Dust Jacket

The dust jacket is the paper that is wrapped around the book. It is there to protect the book, and if missing, the value of the book is severely diminished. The dust jacket price can be found in the upper right hand corner of the front flap of the dust jacket. The code (if there is one) is found on the bottom of the front flap.

Binding Information

Binding information is important because not all editions of a book are bound in the same way. A full bound book will be all cloth, without paper boards. Quarter bound indicates a book that has cloth closest to the spine, and then boards. The colors are important, because, again, not all editions are bound with the same colors. Paste-downs are simply the pieces of paper that are pasted down to the inside of the book. The front and rear end papers are those pieces of thicker paper that are at the very beginning and very end of the book.

Copyright Page Information

Copyright page information is pretty straight forward. Most follow a numerical code to determine a first edition. The codes vary. If a code is present, all will start with a 1 or 10, except Black House which has the code "2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3". Most codes look like this:

The Early Years: 1974-1984

Let's start at the beginning. I will go book-by-book, and give you all the information you need. Terms are defined on the right of the text.

Carrie:Published in 1974 by Doubleday. Trim size is 5.75 x 8.5 x 0.9". Dust Jacket price is $5.95. The book is full bound in maroon cloth. Paste-downs and front and rear paper color in black. "First Edition" is printed on copyright page and "P6" is printed on page 199.

Salem's Lot:Published in 1975 by Doubleday. Trim size is 5.75 x 8.5 x 1.25". Dust jacket price is $7.95/$8.95. The book is quarter bound in black cloth with red boards. Paste-downs and front and rear end paper in white. "First Editon" is printed on copyright page, "Q37" is printed on page 439. There are three dust jacket states to look for. 1) $8.95 on dust jacket, Father Cody error. (this is very rare!) 2) price clipped, $7.95, Father Cody error. 3) $7.95 on dust jacket, Father Callahan. Code on dust jacket reads, "A NEW NOVEL" will have no anchor on spine.

The Shining: Published in 1977 by Doubleday. Trim size is 5.75 x 8.5 x 1.5". Dust jacket price is $8.95. The book is quarter bound in black cloth with tan boards. Paste-downs and front and rear end paper in white. "First Edition" is printed on copyright page, and "R49" is printed on page 447.

Rage:Published under name Richard Bachman in 1977 by Signet. Trim size is 4.2 x 7.0 x 0.7". It was published as a paperback, so no dust jacket or binding information. Price listed as $1.50. "First Signet Printing, September, 1977" on Copyright page. code, "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9" on copyright page.

Night Shift: Published in 1978 by Doubleday. Trim size is 5.75 x 8.5 x 1". Dust jacket price is $8.95. The book is quarter bound in black cloth with red boards. Paste-downs and front and rear end paper in white. "First Edition" is printed on copyright page, and "S52" is printed on page 336.

1996-current

This is the section that will see frequent updates, as new works are published. I may have to break it up after a certain point, maybe a year or two, but for now, I chose to include everything since 1996 in one section. King's writing has become less frequent. Part of this is due to serious injury he receieved after being hit by a car, and some of it has to do with him getting older, and just slowing down a little bit. After all, it's not like he needs to write to make money. I am glad he is still writing, even if I have to wait, and wait for the next book to come out!

Omg! I was pregnant in 1982 while reading Pet Cemetary. I woke up repeatedly with nightmares within nightmares and tears over Gage with his "milk white baby teeth", in my head. I would buy Stephens books as soon as they came out so probably Donated several first editions. I bought the red bound faux leather Book of the month club editions, until they discontinued publishing the set. Wish I'd kept the letter with my set. Alas.......Any idea on value of this small library of Stephen's? I love your site!

Hello, I have a question about Rose Madder. You mention burnt orange paper? My book seems to be a first edition but the pages are white. Everything else is correct. Also, removing the dust jacket, there is a red rose on the cover.

I'm pretty sure I have a 1st edition The long walk, but the copyright page says First printing,July 1979 123456789. Not first Signet printing July 1979. It is a Signet paperback book though. The price is $1.95 not $2.25 and has a number on the top right hand corner under the publishers logo "Signet 451 J8754 $1.95" I this becoming more confusing or what.

I found a copy of The Shining today in rather good condition and was told it was a first edition. It is the proper height and everything for a first edition. Black with gold lettering, Doubleday 1977 it does not have a dust jacket unfortunately. However the page code is R52. Is this a book club edition? If so any idea on value?

Greg-- Book Club editions tend to be smaller than the original editions. I have a few Book Club Editions, myself. They will also usually say "Book Club Edition" on the front, inside flap of the dust jacket.

partspatti-- It was a lot of homework!! And I thought I was done with that after I finished school! I don't really know for sure about the value of that book. Since those are still fairly rare, even though it isn't a first edition, they should be worth quite a bit. Sorry to hear about the bookstore closing. My favorite used bookstore closed recently, as well. I did look, and there seems to be several other bookstores in the area. They might be able to get you in touch with someone who can put a value on your book for you. If I had to guess, and it would just be a guess, I would say that considering the market, and having not seen the condition it's in (which is most of what effects the value) I would say it might be worth anywhere between $100-400. I know that isn't much help.

Very very good article. You've REALLY done your homework. I have a 2nd edition of a hardback "The Dark Tower-The Gunslinger" and I was wondering if you have any idea of the value of it. Many years ago Bettes Bookstore in Bangor valued it at $350.; but they seem to be out of business now. Do you know off hand?...I was disappointed to read here that the book club editions aren't really worth much. That's what most of mine are. I'll start looking at yard sales. Thanks for the clues.

We have two copies of Different Seasons. Both books are exactly the same. The dust jackets have the correct code number and the copyright page says "First Published in 1982 by the Viking Press". However, there is no price on either dust jacket. Articles I have seen suggest that these are book club books but how can you tell for sure? They are not quarter cloth bound.

Dave-- That is interesting. I know that not having the dust jacket does diminish the value. As to the error, it is strange that such an error was allowed to make it into circulation. Usually, that sort of error is caught, and the book is destroyed. I can't really say if that would add anything to the value. The condition of the book leads me to believe that it was a well read copy, though the error would make it a little hard to read (I would think).

Diana-- I am sorry to hear about your financial troubles. As to where to take the books, there are several options. You can try to sell them on eBay. Some have had some success with that. Or, you can research a local book dealer or used book store. Sometimes they will buy the books from you, or they will sell them on consignment. I will tell you that the Book Club Editions aren't worth a lot. The older ones will still get you some money, though not the same as if it were a true first edition. Same goes with your copy of Thinner. There is some value, just not a lot. It is hard to find first editions of the older books, so some people will still buy the book club editions, so they have a copy. It is still old, and it still has some value. If you do find someone to sell your books to, make sure you do your research, talk with them, get some customer responses in regards to their fairness of price, professionalism, etc.

You said it's hard to find 'Eyes Of The Dragon' 1st Ed in good condition. Mine is lovely. Also my 'Thinner' is oringinal: Copyright @ 1984 by Richard Bachman on cp, published simultaneously in Canada by New American Library. On the gorgeous cover, THINNER - A Novel by Richard Bachman.

EXCEPT it's a BCE. I'm bummed out. So does that completely destroy the value then?

Hi Ms. Bowman I'm so happy to discover your site. When I began buying every book SK wrote since Carrie the minute they came out I never thought about the $ value, only that they were precious to me because I LOVE his writing so much and I never thought I'd ever sell them. HowEVER... thanks to the divorce taking much too long my finances are in the dumper and I find myself having to sell my large eclectic library. sigh.. I'm starting with my SK collection and thanks to your wonderful information I find I have many Stephen KIng 1st Editions. I find also that in the 70's when I was in high school then college and always broke I bought several of his books through book clubs I joined because it's cheaper. So several early ones say BOOK CLUB EDITION which I deduce from your info aren't worth much. Oh well. After college etc and I became successful financially of course I bought his books as they were released so they're 1st's and in beautiful condition. I have a couple of questions I'd like to ask you relating to certain books because I'm not quite sure if i'm interpreting your information correctly. Obvious ones saying FIRST EDTION of course aren't confusing but I'd really appreciate your input for others If you like I could scan and email covers and copyright pgs etc, but I don't want to be a bother. Just wondering,

I grabbed a first printing of : Needful things.

Above, I read there's a lot of these floating around. It's in rough shape(has been well enjoyed many times)and is missing the dust jacket. This particular book has a manufacturing error ,wherein; during the binding process a section got folded at the inside corner. This section doubles inward on the upper side and has not been trimmed. Would an error like this affect the value.

Now i got misery,the stand (1st time and uncut),pet cematary,tommy knockers,nightmares and dreamscapes,firestarter,Dolores Claiborne,dreamcatcher,black House,to go with the regulator,and 2 other books I mentioned earlier! All are hard cover,couple first edition, and one paper back It book! Been a lucky day for me but might of spent to much...but maybe down the road I will sell them! Read firestarter yrs ago and might get around reading the other King books!

Vic-- You may be right, for certain publishers. However, I have bought Stephen King books the day they come out, knowing they are a first edition, and it started with a '10'.

Dark Score-- It might be. Depending on the market. US collectors tend to like foreign editions because they are harder to find over here. A book club edition might be worth less, though. I can't really tell you an exact value, though.

Hi, I'm no expert, but I've been collecting books for decades and everything I've heard about misbound books (the upside down ones mentioned earlier) say that they're not particularly valuable. In fact, they may hurt the value. I've seen dozens of such books.

Also, the book with the "10" on the number line is probably the tenth printing of the first edition. This last usage confuses the issue; many people wouldn't call this a first edition, and it would be dishonest, but technically correct, to sell this to a collector as a first edition. (Publishers might say it's a new edition only when they redo the print setting.)

Kim-- I am planning on going to a book signing in November, and I am struggling with the same thing. I would take your favorite book and have that signed. Anything signed by King is valuable, because he does signings rather infrequently. I figure I will just have him sign the new book that comes out around the time I go...'11/22/1963'. Really looking forward to it! Have fun at the signing, and like I said, anything you get signed is ultimately more valuable, just because he signed it.

Hi. Thanks so much for offering this information. It has been very helpful. I have a question for ya. Next week I am going to a Stephen King book signing. I cannot decide what book to take to have signed. Idealy I would love to have a First Edition Carrie signed but unfortunately my Carrie was purchased at a book fair and it is a leftover from a BOMC :( So, the only early book I have in first ed is Pet Semetary but it is not in great shape. I do have The Gunslinger in trade soft cover that is a first edition. Also most of his books from The Tommyknockers to his most recent are all first editions. I also have The Stephen King Universe signed by all 3 authors. Do you have an opinion of what would be the best & possibly most valuable to have signed?

amy-- you are the second poster to pose a question about a book that has been bound upside down. I have never seen or heard of this before. I imagine it would be worth something, even if it isn't a first edition. Anything that has been done in error, usually ends up being a rare accident, and therefore is worth money. The more rare something is, the more money it would be worth. I could not tell you how much, though. As I said, I had never heard of this before I received a previous post about it.

I have a question about my copy of "Under The Dome". The copyright page states "First Scribner Hardcover Edition November 2009" and The Number Line is simply "10". Your points of issue are different, but my version also clearly states first edition. Can you clarify this for me at all?

Karen-- I have the same problem...I tend to buy a book even when I know I already have it, maybe it's in better condition, maybe it's a first edition, or maybe I forgot that I already had it. Sometimes I buy a book I know I already have just because it's a great deal. I have several that I also have several copies of, as well. I just happened to collect more than 1 copy of many of these books during quests at yard sales, etc. for first editions and obviously don't need more than 1 copy. OK, I have discovered some interesting points of reference on "The Dead Zone".

First Edition - VERSION 1 - First Published in 1979 by Viking Press - 625 Madison Ave New York, New York 10022. This version has SK embossed on the front cover board. All other POI are just like you state.

First Edition - VERSION 2 - First Published in 1979 by Viking Press - 40 West 23 Street New York, NY 10010. This version DOES NOT have SK embossed on the cover board. All other POI are just like you state.

Now, I also have a copy that is exactly like VERSION 1 above but also lists the NUMBER LINE "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3". I am assuming because there is a 1 in the number line that it means 1st edition, and the 3 at the end means 3rd printing?

Anyway, wanted to give you all this info I dug up. Seems like there are TWO versions of First Editions floating around and I want to know which one came 1st? Or does it not matter?

Art-- You are right. It is pretty rare. I haven't seen one yet. I keep looking though. It should be worth something, though considering the condition, it might be hard to find a serious collector who would want it. Remember, it's all about condition, and rarity. You may find a buyer based on the rarity alone. It's one of my favorite books!

A small part of each cover is gone, the rest is creased and in well worn condition

Art-- No problem!! In fair condition, you could get anywhere from $60-100. That depends on the exact condition, based on what a book dealer puts the condition at. The strangest little things affect value.

GG IN TX-- No problem. That is odd. I can't find anything about it. It's as if you have the only copy like that? Probably not, but who knows. I can't check my copies, because they are boxed up. Now I want to dig them out. Since it is an obvious error, it should be worth a decent amount of money. I wish I could tell you more, or knew more...

hey, thanks for the quick response on my upside down book, sorry it's taking me so long to reply. The actual hard cover of the book, both front and rear, was put on upside down. If you were to read the book, close it and turn it around to look at the binding, the word Scribner and the symbol would be upside down at the top of the binding. I hope I'm explaining this OK, and not making it worse. But I guess it was just one of those things that slipped through quality control or something. I've never heard of that before either which is why I'm really curious what it might be worth. Thanks again for the help!!

Art-- I can't say for sure on your copy of Different Seasons. Check for a code on the copyright page, or some indicator on that page. DJ codes are handy for certain references, but are a tad confusing. As for your Dark Tower books...You may have something there. I can't say for sure without seeing them. Most of my early ones are from Plume, and not worth much. Great artwork, though. Again, check out the copyright page for the most useful information.

Hello! I have stumbled upon your article and find it extremely helpful. Between your site and The official Stephen King site, I can identify 1st editions quite easily now. I do have 1 book that is giving me raised eyebrows that I simply cannot completely identify. I'm hoping you can help.

PET SEMATARY - DJ has every requirement of the 1st Edition. The book however is different. It is Full Bound Black with red paste downs. Copyright is Doubleday & Company, Inc. Garden City New York 1983. ISBN 0-385-18244-9. CP does NOT say 1st Edition. Epilogue Page 374 has print code "Y43". What is this? Possibly a 2nd printing where someone put the ist edition DJ on it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Art-- It depends on where you are. I am sure if you talked to your local library they may be able to help you. Check with a used book store. They are often great about that sort of thing, and may even want to buy your collection. A website to check out would be, veryfinebooks.com. They deal in rare books, first editions, etc, and have a whole category devoted to Stephen King.

I just found the shining published by doubleday copyright 1977. don't have the dustjacket but itis bound with blackcloth and tan boards and measures9 1/2x6 1/4. doesnt say first edition or anything except library of congress catalog card # 76-24212

Mike-- Your copy of Needful Things is a second printing. It is not a true first edition. Even if it was, that is a newer book, and not all that rare. I have two copies of the book, both first editions, and they are worth about $15-20 a piece. And, seeing that it is missing the dust jacket, even if it had been a first edition, it would not be worth much. As far as your copy of Dolores Claiborne...again, missing dust jacket greatly affects the value. The size seems consistent with a library or book club edition. It might even say "Book Club Edition" on the inside of the dust jacket, if you had one. I hope this helps!!

I also noticed my copy of Dolores Claiborne contains all the criteria inside (missing jacket) except that it measures in at 5.87 x 9.5 x 1.25". Any help you could offer with this would be wonderful. Thank you.

My edition of Needful Things is missing the 1 in the code on the copyright page, but everything else matches. Does this mean it's not a first edition, or is it an error? I am missing the dust jacket.

GG IN TX-- What exactly do you mean when you say it was printed upside down? Is the dust jacket just on upside down, or is the actual front cover of the book printed upright, and all the text inside is upside down? I don't entirely know what you mean. I have never heard of that existing, but it is possible. If so, it would be worth a decent amount of money. Anything that was an error, or mistake, misprint, that sort of thing, is worth more than a normal copy without errors.

I went back to the bookstore days after I realized what I had to check out all the others and could not find another like it. Just started my collection of King Novels. I am going to pickup a lot of 31 HC novels this afternoon (crossing my fingers for Firsts, but am happy to get a couple HC of IT, Pet Sematary, and The Shining). My collection is currently pretty decent in that I have 22 1sts. I thank you very much Anna Marie for putting this together! Looking forward to your update on 11/22/1963.

Brian-- The ones that are book club editions won't be worth much...maybe around $5-10, depending on the age of the book. Also, I am sure that being that they were in a library, there are library stamps, and other such things that will diminish the value. They really wouldn't be worth much, but are great for reading!!!

I have recently received 20 or so hardcover King books from a family memeber who works in a library. Most are book of the month copies. The sad thing is none of them appeared to ever even been opened. I don't know if they were stored and never put on the shelf because of objectionable material. (This library is in small town very conservative WI). Regardless, they range from as old as Carrie to as new as Cell. Any thoughts on the older ones values? I'd never sell them, but I may store them a little differently. Great site!

I came here to find out whether the Stephen King books I had were First Edition. According to your guide and multiple other sources I managed to find NINE First Edition Stephen King books. I actually need to head back to that store because there were another one or two there that are also First Edition, I just forgot to grab them the first time.

Jessie-- I don't usually email people back from my email account, but I can answer your question here. While it is a fun piece to have in your collection, it isn't really worth a whole lot. Maybe around $15-20. If you can find the right buyer, they may be willing to pay more, if the condition is as good as you say. Pop-up books are hard to keep in really good condition. I hope this answers your question.

Have a question. I have a Stephen King Pop-Up book called, "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon." No dust jacket (I don't know if it was supposed to come with one), no tears in any of the pages, hard covered book. All of the pop-ups come up great with the turning of each page. No visible tears or bends (to what I can see) on any part of the book. The back of the book (where UPC code is) says First Edition 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

Jim-- I had a little trouble finding that out, myself. All I can seem to find is editions in paperback. They aren't worth much. A first edition of Night Shift can run between $500-700 dollars, in a good market, and foreign editions tend to be collectable, and valuable. If I had to put an estimate...I would say in the $300 range, give or take...depending on condition, market, etc.

king collector--If only I had $80,000...I might take you up on that offer. Of course, that would depend on the number, condition, and value of the books you have. And there is the little matter of not having 80 grand. I hope you find a buyer for all the books.

teamsparky-- Any markings not original to the book (aside from an autograph by the author) do diminish the value of the book. Also, if they put that plastic protector sheet over the dust jacket, that would diminish the value a little as well, I think. Though, it does a great job of protecting the condition of the dust jacket.

John-- If they don't meet all the requirements, they are more than likely not first editions. Book Club editions usually are smaller in size, and don't include the price on the dust jacket. I am not sure about later editions, if they have the price on the dust jacket, or not. I would assume that they are later printings of the book.

Adoba-- Dust jacket condition does affect the value. If it is a true first edition of the first, edited version of The Stand, that price is reasonable, even considering the condition of the dust jacket. Just make sure it is a true first edition.

Published in 2010 by Scribner. Trim size is 6.4 x 9.5 x 1.4". Dust jacket price is $27.99. The book is quarter bound in black cloth with light blue boards. Paste-downs and front and rear end papers in white. Code "1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2" on copyright page.

Also, I have a question about "Four Past Midnight"

You State: Published in 1990 by Viking. Trim size is 6.25 x 9.5 x 1.9". Dust jacket price is $22.95 and code on dust jacket is "0990". The book is quarter bound in black cloth with black boards. Paste-downs and front and rear end papers in red. "First published in 1990 by Viking Penguin" and code "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" on copyright page. First dust jacket state has SK in gold on front cover, and second state lacks the gold.

On my copy, Everything matches up (Including the Gold SK on the cover) except for the paste downs in my copy are not Red, they are Orange. All numbers match, including the "first published in 1990 by viking". Any Ideas? thanx. Also, my copy of The Tommyknockers meets all your criteria except it does not have "permissions to come" on the copyright page.

My copy of Cell meets all of the criteria you listed to be a first edition except that it is bound in red cloth and black boards and not vice versa as you have listed. What does this mean? Wonderful hub! Thanks for all of your hard work! I have 4 first editions.

Shannon-- Yeah, they are in boxes, as I don't have a place to put them right now. It makes me sad. I have read that story, and I loved it. My favorite thing would have to be The Dark Tower series. Such an amazing body of work, and then you have to add in all the stories that tie in to it. It really is amazing. It's as if his whole career has been about that one story.

Good idea having a hardcover and a paperback collection. I kept getting rid of my paperbacks to save space. My collection takes up an entire bookshelf all by itself.

Shannon-- I'm not really sure. Everything about the Dead Zone sounds right. My guess is that they are a second or third printing of the first edition. As for your copy of Salem's Lot, I don't know. I don't know what to tell you on that one. It should be worth some money because of the error alone.

Yay! I think think think I hit the jackpot! 'Salem's Lot with the Father Cody error on the dust jacket, clipped with the 7.95 price, BUT no "first edition" on the copyright page. Ugh, why can't everything line up for me so I can do a happy dance already?

Hello, huge fan of Stephen King, I have most of his mainstream-ly published books (lol, there's a LOT of rare stuff out there, whew!) but anyway, I've decided to see which first editions I have. Thank you, firstly, for putting together this list, it has been very helpful. I have a question though.

Does the book have to have every detail you mention to be a first edition? For example, my Dead Zone has the 0879 code on the dust jacket, is quarter bound in black cloth with black boards, the paste downs are white, and "First Published in 1979 by the Viking Press" is printed on copyright page. But there is no price anywhere on my dust jacket.

Some of my other books are like this also, with most everything, but one thing left out. Like, my Eyes Of The Dragon paste downs are white, not green.

What do you think? Thank you in advance. :)

Mr. Roboto-- Be cautious when buying books from a library. They usually glue things in the books, mark the books with stamps and such, and all that devalues the books. IT is still a great read, though.

It's worth about $35-50 depending on the condition, and might fetch a higher price, if you can find the right buyer. Creepshow...hmmm...is that the comic-esque graphic novel?? Definitely worth the $10!!!

OK- I got the info on the book

"On Writing." that we spoke about. There's a least 2 book clubs that sell this book with almost everything described as it would be a first edition except theres no price on the jacket and one club has a different size. Fullnumber lines are present, so it's just something else that makes things more confusing. Easiest way to see ....no price, it's a BCE...Thought I had misprint, oh well, there goes my free vacation....Pete

Pete-- Let me know what you find out. If it is a limited publication, it will usually say so. It will say something like "Limited Printing", "Limited Edition", or it will be numbered, say "234 of 2,000".

No indication of a BCE. Also they usually don't have print number lines which mine has. I'm gonna go ahead and buy a BCE and see if it matches up. I am not really sure. I don't actually own a first edition of this book, so I don't have one to actually measure. I am not sure why different companies are listing different sizes. I do know the 'book of the month club' editions tend to run smaller. Check the book for something that might say if it was a library edition or a BOTMC edition. It is usually on the inside of the dust jacket, either the front or the back, at the bottom, I think.

no cut out, just no price. I think the problem lies in the dimensions of the book. Amazon has a different size as do other companies. Theres a BCE that has no price but it doesn't match my book size either. Perhaps the "book of the month club is giving a size error?" no cut out here, just blank. There seems to be a problem with the actual size of this book. Amazon- 8.5 x 5.8 x 1.2 inches. Other companies have dimensions slightly different. The "book of the month club" also publishes it, but the size they claim is "5.062 x 8.187 x 1.0 inches." ???

On my copy, there is also only one isbn# instead of the usual 2 numbers. I'm not sure what I got here but it must be the BCE. Perhaps they made a mistake in thier size?

Long Walker-- Goodwill, garage sales, thrift shops, and the sort are all great places to find first editions for pretty cheap. I once bought four hardcover first editions at a garage sale for $0.25 a piece. $1 for four books!! I have both versions of the Insomnia book as well. Great find!!!

I just wanted to share! A friend of mind gave me a book they got at a Goodwill store for a buck, it's Insomnia HC first edition, which I already had, but, it was the red cover with white writing, I had the white cover red writing, so now I have both, I'm excited for this great find!

Wonderfully informational and according to it I have 21 first editions out of my collection of 35 books! Yeah!!! I love SK and I could never sell these books but they are going to make a wonderful heirloom for my children.

Long Walker- Yes, that is how it was released. It had a textured cover to look like dragon scales. The textured detail does not come through in the photo.

LINDY-- Not sure. It might have been a limited edition, published after the first edition. Could be worth quite a bit, depending on how many were made, what condition it's in.

searching-- Library editions are editions of the book given to a library. Generally, they see a lot of wear, bindings are usually broken, they have stamps or other things that damage or mark the pages. The value goes down because of that. They are usually sent out with, or after the first editions. Nice to have, but not sure of the value.

Love the info here, well done of your amount of work! Question: how far down does the value go if it's a library edition? They look exactly like the regular editions, but without DJ price. At this point, I've got 26 first editions, and 5 special editions, working on the rest

I found a few hardbacks today at a flea market. the seller mentioned something about an edition of CUJO with a gold cover that was worth a lot due to the small amount made. do you know anything about that or where to see a picture?

Jay D.-- Sad to say, if it's a 3rd edition paperback, it's not really worth much more than what you paid for it. Sorry. It's a good read, though!!! One of my favorites of the Bachman stuff.

Sandler - Thank you very much; yeah I knew the hardback of Storm of the Century didn't have a price, so now that you told me BOMC editions don't have dust jacket prices I'll know that future printings by BOMC most likely won't as well; good to know, I was wondering why so many copies of Secret Windows that I saw didn't have the listed price actually printed

Will S.- As far as I know, BOMC editions don't have dust jacket prices. Both the Storm of the Century and Secret Windows are both BOMC issued hardcovers, but neither have dust jacket prices. Storm of the Century was issued as a 1st edition trade paperback in 1999 with a cost of $15.00. The copyright page shows "First Pocket Books Trade Paperback Printing Feb 1999" and also the traditional "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" number line. BOMC then released a hardcover after that (technically not a 1st edition). As for Secret Windows, I believe it was only released by BOMC at an initial price of $18.75 (but not actually printed on the dust jacket)...

Thanks for this article, I've been using it to complete my collection! Random question, I've seen over 15 copies of Secret Windows, but I couldn't find the $18.75 price on any of them...does anyone have a picture of the price on the dust jacket so I could see what it looks like on the true first edition? Is Secret Windows kind of like Storm of the Century hardcover in that the only BOMC edition doesn't have a dust jacket price? Thanks!

Eddie-- The first edition would be the first publishing of the first edition of the book, so if you have found a copy of Pet Sematary published in 1987, it is not a first edition.

How come "Pet Sematary" has two listings for a first? One was listed as first published in 1983 and the other was listed first published in 1987. So which is the real "first" edition?

Kelyyhthompson-- Thank you, I would be curious to see what additional research you have done.

teamsparky-- A book club edition is one that was distributed as part of a book of the month club. They are generally different in size. The content is usually the same, though, sometimes they are a bit condensed. Being book club editions, they are not first editions, and are of less value. You get the same book (usually), so it's good for a good read.

I Have 3 Stephen King library red leather bound books gold embossed lettering on spline and his name, Firestarter, Christine, Eyes of the dragon like to know how rare they might be if at all. great website and very informative

I happened upon this hub by accident and I am so happy that I did! I have almost all of Stephen King's original, first edition novels! I am totally floored! I am so glad that I did not get rid of them. I almost did. But I love these books so much I decided to keep them. Awesome! Thanks for the hub. Now I know what to look for when I collect the remaining books.

I have several first editions that I have more than one copy of, and still, I hate to part with them...maybe in a few more years. OH, and one bit of news, the newest King book comes out next month!!!!

I have the Stephen King book "Skeleton Crew" as stated it is a first edition with all markings $18.95 price, 8506 price code. But the book is a burnt tan or orange cloth binding; it has Chinese markings/characters for the publisher. And Stephen King's name is red on the front DJ. Where did this book come from??

TamCor-- I am glad you found this as well. I hope it is helpful to you!! And if you do find that you do have some first editions of some of the older books, I am always in the market to buy them!! LOL!! Still working on the value guide to the first editions. It's proving a bit harder than I thought it would be.

Glenn-- You may be right on that one. I am not sure. I can check and let you know. Blaze kind of fell flat for me. I never got into the story. Maybe it had to do with the writing perspective. I don't know.

King's Blaze. I thought Blaze was a Gimmick to readvertise Bachman. But in "I think Differnt Seasons" or a differnt short story collection from early 80's Stephen King does mention of working on a story called Blaze, either in the foreword or afterword write up. Imagine that, Food for thought.

Thank you for writing such a great hub! I have several of the old Stephen King books, and can't wait to compare them to your info, to see if any are first editions!

I love his older work the best, and have also enjoyed watching some of movies they'd made of them. My favorite book of his would probably be The Stand, but I loved Needful Things and The Firestarter almost as much!

scramblingman-- Thank you very much!! As for foreign publications, I honestly don't know a lot about that. I wish I did. Maybe I will do some more research and see what I can put together. I am still working on the value part of the whole thing. That is going to be an ongoing work, as values of rare books change frequently. Hope you enjoy Needful Things!!! It's one of my favorites!!

I just wanted to echo everyone elses comments, great article! I have a few first editions, but mostly UK publications. However, on vacation in California a few years ago I did manage to buy a first edition of Needful Things. Can't wait for your value article!

Pest-- Yeah, Bachman "died". King writes about it, in a fictional sense, in The Dark Half. The books published after Bachman's "death" were said to have been found by his wife amongst his belongings. LOL!

christine-- It was a lot of work, but it was a labor of love, so to speak. I love Stephen King, and spent a lot of time trying to sort all of the information out for myself. I figured it would benefit others to have the access to the information that I managed to compile.

Elena-- Thank you!! When I first started trying to identify my books, and started being a serious collector, I had to search and search for this information, and some of the terms were a little confusing for me. I figured the pictures would make the whole guide a little easier to navigate through. On another note, foreign language editions, and basic foreign editions of his novels do have some value for a U.S. collector. Since they are harder to find here, they are worth more. Overseas releases may not be first U.S. editions, but if you get a first edition for your language, or country, it could be worth some money. I don't know a lot about that, but it would be fun to research!!

Pest-- I agree!!! I have heard so many people say that they don't like Stephen King, and I ask why, and they tell me that it is because they don't like his movies. It makes me laugh. Then I tell them that The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me are based on stories by Stephen King, and they tell me that they like those movies.

Pest, I have him, just in Spanish, not in English! I've got plenty of English books, but I do like to read in my own language every now and again! Mystery, terror and those types of topics, I tend to read in Spanish :-)

For me Stephen King is an author that you must have in your collection.   Whether you like him, love him or hate him, he is a must.

I believe Bachman "died" in 1985.  ....  I just picked up "The Regulators" hard cover, 1st from the Salvation Army...mint.  i did not know "Desperation" was related.

ooohh...that sucks!!  That means it has those library stamps on it, and who knows what else!  You can find a lot of first editions in great shape at garage sales, used book stores and even places like Goodwill.

Great article! I searched through my books and found that my copy of The Dark Half is a first edition. Unfortunately, I bought it out of the withdrawn books at the library.
