I Hate My Cell Phone
I Really Do
What more can I really say other than that? I hate my stupid cell phone.
OK, so I don't hate my cell phone specifically, just what having a cell phone has done to me and society as a whole. And to be honest, it isn't entirely hate. It's a vicious love/hate relationship that drives me insane. I remember what it was like to not have a cell phone, back when no one had cell phones. Now, I can't imagine my life without it. I guess that is what I hate the most; the dependency that has developed in most people concerning cell phones.
Confessions of an Addict
I guess I hate my cell phone most of all, because of the fact that I can't seem to live without it.
I never had a cell phone until about 2005. I never needed one. My ex-husband was deploying to Iraq, and I was working at the time. He thought it would be a good thing for me to get one. It seemed like an innocent enough idea at the time, a good idea, even. Little did I know what kind of hold it would have over me.
At first, it was no big deal. I used it on occasion, and I often forgot to bring it with me. Then, I would go somewhere, and not have it. I would wonder, Did he call? What time is it over there? Why didn't I bring it with me?
I got in the habit of carrying it around with me everywhere, and I mean everywhere. I brought it to the bathroom with me. I have even been known to answer the stupid thing while I was in the shower! Yeah, not a great idea!! More on that later!!
I started using it more and more, and then texting, too. I became a master at texting! My phone was always with me. I needed it! I couldn't live without it! It had a hold on me.
Fear Sets In
So, in the early days of my cell phone obsession, I came across a book by my favorite author, Stephen King. The title of the book was simply, Cell. The cover showed a broken cell phone and blood. I had to read it. I bought it immediately. It's the story of a mysterious Pulse that turns people into something less than human, primal and full of carnage. The Pulse is delivered though your cell phone, and having just gotten used to this little modern marvel, it creeped me out!
Not to say that I expected my cell phone to turn me into a mindless, violent zombie, but that kernel of fear was there. Could it be possible? I bet there will come a time when something similar to that could actually be done...
It made me look at my cell phone a little differently. More so than those silly stories about cell phones causing cancer, or phones blowing up and killing people. Maybe those stories are true, and I know that phones in other countries have blown up, but that never worried me. The thought that some day...some day something like what King wrote about could actually happen, chilled me to the bone. Not enough to stop using my cell phone, though.

The Addiction Continues
Of course I keep using my cell phone!! How else would everyone I care about be able to get ahold of me when I'm not at home? Therein lies the problem. People can get ahold of you no matter where you are. No longer can you use the excuse "I wasn't home, sorry I missed you." when that annoying friend, who always wants something from you (a favor, money, a kidney...whatever) calls you. Screening your phone calls becomes harder to do. What can you really say now? "Sorry, my phone was dead." "I can't believe I missed your call, it never rang!" "I don't know what happened. I don't have any missed calls." The excuses start to sound stupid.
I NEVER let my phone go dead! If I even sense that it's approaching the single red line instead of the three green ones, I plug that baby in!! I can't afford to miss a call! What if it's someone important?
Several times, I have had to go without a cell phone! Tragic, I know. You may be asking yourself, How did she survive? What did she do? How did people get ahold of her? She couldn't even text...how sad. It was, really. Very sad.
The first occasion left me without a phone for weeks. I didn't know what to do. I had no way to call people when I wasn't at home, I had no way to text stupid little messages to all my friends. I lost my phone. Simple as that. I went out to the bars one night with some friends. I always had my phone. It had come in handy on a few nights out, and I never knew when I would need it to call for a cab. Well, I don't really know what happened, but I had it one minute, and when I left the bar, I didn't have it anymore. I was devastated! Thankfully, a new phone was mailed to me, and since that model was no longer available, I was able to upgrade to my favorite phone. It was perfect, and even pink!! Sadly, that phone also met a tragic end.
As I said before, I have even been known to take the phone with me into the bathroom. It doesn't matter what I am doing. I could be taking a shower, a bath, whatever. It goes with me. That brings me to the death of my pretty, pink cell phone. I was talking on the phone while I was in the bath. I dropped it. I sprang into action with my quick, cat-like reflexes, and managed to catch it before it even hit the bottom of the tub. Sadly, my efforts were in vain. It was not enough to save the poor thing. It had died. Luckily, I had a back-up phone! It was a pre-pay phone I bought a week before I was able to put in the order for the pink phone. I had some issues with the whole process, since I had lost it, I had to file a police report, and jump through a thousand hoops before I would get a new phone. I held onto in case of emergencies.
My pre-pay phone got me through some tough times. It was a great plan! Not a lot of minutes, but unlimited text messages!! I got even better at texting, and hardly ever had the need to call anyone! I LOL'ed, and TTYL'ed till my fingers felt like they were going to fall off.

The Truth of the Matter
I still have a cell phone, and it still goes with me everywhere. If it rings, I HAVE to answer it!! Even when I am at work, and I can't use it, I hear it ring, and I want to pick it up, and at least see who it is...maybe it's important. Why else would someone call me at work? I know that whoever is calling may have no idea that I am at work, but that's how my mind works. I have even been tempted to answer the phone during sex. Big, no-no, I know. I don't do it, but I hear that stupid ringtone (I still haven't spent the money on the data package that will allow me to create my own ringtones), and I have this urge to stop whatever I am doing and answer the damn thing!!
Addiction at it's best. I hate that I am always available, and that if I don't answer, I get the questions; Where were you? Why didn't you answer? Did you see that I called?
Of course I saw that you called. I might as well have my phone permanently grafted to my hand. I feel like it's a part of me, and I feel naked without it. I am ashamed of this. Ashamed to admit that a little electronic device, no different that anything else, has become so much a part of my life that the thought of life without it seems wrong. I am ashamed to admit that I have been one of those annoying people, walking down the street, talking too loudly on my phone. I do, however, always remember to turn the ringer to vibrate while at the movies. I never turn it off. What if someone calls? It might be important!
I love and hate the fact that no matter where I am, or what I am doing, I am always a phone call away. It has it's good sides and bad sides. I can call and talk to my daughter on my lunch break, I can call 911 from anywhere in case of an emergency, and I can call my mom or sister when I hear, or see something that reminds me of them, or that I know they would like to hear about. I hate the fact that people call me while I am working, or eating, or watching a movie. I hate those stupid spam chain letter texts that have started floating around, and I hate annoying people who can't walk and text at the same time. I can't walk and text, so I get out of the way, and stop moving.
I hate that laws have had to be enacted to protect people from stupid behavior, like texting while driving, or talking on a cell phone while crossing a street. I love blue-tooth!! I love camera phones and picture messages, and I love being just a call or text away from people who are so far away from me, otherwise. I do hate my cell phone, but I don't know what I would do without it.

My professor, first day of class, first homework assignment said don't use any technology for 48 hours. Next day of class, no one, including myself, lasted more than 24 hours. When I got in the car to go home after class I turned on my iPod and 5 mins after listening to some tunes, I was kicking myself. I unknowingly was using technology. I hate it but I couldn't function in my job without it.

moneycop-- You might be right. Who knows?? Thankfully, I spend more time texting than actually talking to people, so all those potentially harmful rays aren't beaming themselves directly into my head.

Mcken-- It's funny how much the cell phone has changed our habits. Back before I had a cell phone, I would never have imagined jumping out of the shower for a phone call.
i like to use them in the bathroom, and i dont know why..and yes, i would rush out of the shower just to reply a text message. its like a reflex action!

Haha... that's awesome, as I read through it I couldn't stop nodding in agreance. We seem to think a lot alike. I, too, was a cell phone hold out, till I got a new job in 2006 as a field tech where I was required to have one. Got a lot more reading to do, as this is only your second hub I've read, but you've got another "follower", just the same.
2patricias-- I know. It's a lot harder to hide from people now that we have cell phones. It was easy when all we had to do was say we weren't home.
Funny - but sad. In the earl7 90s Pat had a stressful job that involved a lot of driving. The driving was the relaxing part, because that was before there was the expectation that she would have a cell phone. Now we are on call ALL of the time - and we believe that this is necessary.
You need it like when you're in danger, noone can hear you, and you need to call for the ambulance. Today I can't imagine how life was just 20 years ago when most still people didn't have them.
But I still say the mobile telephones, video games, videocassette recorders or the Internet was never the worst enemy of social life, television was. Why? Because television introduced a scheudled own time, every day.
C-Money-- It really can be a rude invasion, but one we bring on ourselves. I do turn my phone off if I know I am going to be busy and don't want to be bothered. I hate when I am in the middle of something and get interrupted.
syedmn-- I guess people are pretty much the same no matter what, though I do know people who absolutely love their phone, they pretty much have the thing attached to the side of their heads 24/7.
akhiljpr-- I feel almost naked without my phone. I recently got a new phone, and have temporarily renewed my love for a cell phone, but I am still annoyed with being bothered when I am busy, especially when I get calls while I am at work.

mailxpress-- You have a good way of keeping it all in check and in perspective! I admire that. Lately, if I don't feel like talking, I just ignore the calls, text them that I am busy, and call later. I like texting, mostly because I can communicate a simple thing rather quickly, without being tied up on the phone with someone who wants to ramble on for half an hour, when all I wanted to say was that I was running late and would be there soon. Sometimes a text is faster, and a call just slows you down.
K@ri wrote a comment not enjoying the cell phones. I too feel the same way. OK, I do have a phone which I pay $10.00 per month for 100 minutes. It's a cheap phone but it's a phone. When I need it I make a phone call and when I'm finished I shut it off. I don't want to hear the phone ring while I'm driving home from work. The call can wait 30 minutes. I don't enjoy waiting in line at the grocery store and have to listen to a strangers conversation telling the person on the other end how she is a private person. God, at that moment I thought to myself, your an idiot screaming for attention. I don't feel the need to speak to someone while I'm out doing errands for a couple of hours. When I get home I call back and enjoy the conversation. I could go on and on but for the most part I feel cell phones are great for emergencies and that occasional phone that needs to be made because I won't be home for 12 hours.
When I first got my phone everyone questioned why I did not have it on or why I don't enjoy texting. What? When I see you I'll have a conversation with you. When I see you we'll have plenty to talk about. I happen to find texting to be rude and impersonal. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Kids these days don't know how to converse anymore because all they do is text. What? Again, I truly hate it. I feel I'm on the computer enough and when I'm out and about I want to socialize and hold interesting conversations.
Your Hub was so real and can relate because I have friends who just can't put it down. I find it so rude that you must pick up the phone to say, I'm out with Michelle here. And? Call them back later. It's not an emergency and I feel as if you would rather be someplace else. OK, I'll stop now. I'm going to write a Hub about it. Again, thank you for sharing your experience with cell phone addiction.

Love your hub very much, as i am too addicted to my phone and feels very odd whenever i forgets to take it with myself usually whenever i am in hurry for office.
some times i feels that it is my best companion as i can't live without it. I regularly recharges it with Rs.50/-(INR) at least for one week and some times i feel that is waste of money but can't do any thing...

Often, I hear businessmen yelling into their cell phones while in the bathroom stall, or hear someone while I'm talking to them. It's obvious what they are doing. Having one, however, is almost essential. Knowing when to turn it off equally so. Thanks for a good hub.

earnestshub-- I can understand that. I have tiny fingers, but I know some phones have larger number pads, making it easier for people that don't have tiny fingers, like me. As for the screen, yeah, they seem to be so tiny!! Maybe you should look into one of those touch screen phones, like an iPhone or something. Might be easier.
My pet hate with mobiles is the number pad is way to small for my fingers! I have had to cut one thumb nail on an angle so I can enter numbers. The other thing that drives me nuts is trying to read the screen. I need one the size of a TV set!
TeriB-- Vent away!!! I know how you feel!!! I hate trying to talk to someone on the phone, or in person, and they are texting back and forth to someone else the entire time!! I have given up texting, except in rare occasions, when I really can't talk. I don't need to do it anymore!! One vice down, about thirty more to go!
I really have to agree....somehow, having a cell phone now means:
1. Everyone should be able to get me all the time, day and night....I must NEVER fail to answer. Since when do I have to be available to everyone ALL the time?
2. I get the most ridiculous text messages at times, just because of the immediacy of it....people won't wait till they see someone, but just fire off a question left and right.
3. Texting occurs regardless of what else is going on.....I'll go out with my daughter or she will be at the house and is continually having at least 1 other conversation by text and maybe mroe than that....it's not only distracting but I find it rude. I won't even answer my office phone if someone is in talking to me (unless it's my boss). Why should I have to vie for time and attention from someone TYPING a message!

compu-smart-- Yeah, it's handy being able to keep track of everyone in the world via their cell phones! Kinda disturbing. I agree that cell phones are a very important gadget, and glad I have one, but a lot of times, I wish I didn't need the stupid thing.
k@ri-- I hate that, too!!! It's always someone who has to talk way too loud, and it just ruins any enjoyment you would have had.
I enjoyed reading this. I had a love-hate relationship with my cell phone that grew into a hate-hate relationship! I don't like being available to anyone and everyone. It annoys me when I am at a restaurant or movie and have to listen to someone else's conversation. What can I say...I don't enjoy them anymore :(

I really don't like my cell phone because of at least 20 different reasons! One, being its a government trakker following and tracking my movements which is the main reason I never use credit cards and have always payed cash for any and everything I have bought!
I have accidentally dropped and lost my cell phone 100s of times, once in the bath, twice in the toilet and even drove over it, by accident! ....I should take the hint and get rid of it! lol
Having said this, I think cell phones are one of the most important gadgets one could own!
Drunk texting and this "Cha-Cha" thing I just heard about could be a dangerous combination......

FB-- I have a cell, my boyfriend does, and one of the kids has their own! On top of that, we have a house phone through our cell phone company!! We hardly ever use the house phone, and funny enough, that's the number I gave my work. LOL! There are only like two or three people who ever call that number. I don't know why we waste the money to have it.
GT-- Don't you just love drunk dialing and drunk texts?? I have wanted to smash my phone so many times, and a few times I have attempted to do it on accident. I drop my phone all the time. I am surprised it hasn't shattered into a million tiny pieces.
I want to smash my phone. Everywhere I go, I can't take a moment for myself, the damn thing owns me. Its used for both work and play so its nonstop from 6 in the morning to 2 at night when my friends are all drunk.
Excellent hub Anna! I am so with you on this one. I've become one of those people that has a cell, two actually (isn't that horrible?!) In lieu of a house phone. They're not 100% landline anymore, so why should I bother. Great hub. Love it. And those phots you chose are soooo awesome!
Our monthly bill only went up by 30 bucks and that was only because we had to add the data plan. The phone itself was the expense, but my addiction justified it. Ha Ha!! I do have to wait awhile to add more apps. They can get pricey.
If you ever hear of the 12-step program, please forward the information to me. My husband would greatly appreciate it!!

Sweetie-- I had that problem a while back. I was under my mom's plan for a while, and I would download ringtones and recieve picture messages. She would get mad. I stopped downloading ringtones, but no matter how many times I told people to not send me picture messages, they still did it.

countrywoman-- Nope, not joking. I used to keep the phone on a ledge right outside of the shower, and if someone called, I would poke my head out of the shower curtain, and answer it. I don't do it anymore, though.

Laughing Mom-- I want an iPhone sooo bad!! I can just see my bill skyrocket through the roof, though!! Don't they charge you for all those apps? I would have a field day!! The music would be great, though, since I already have iTunes. I wish there were a 12-step program.
This makes those of us just like you feel better that we're not alone. My addiction is so bad, that when mine died a few days ago, I couldn't just replace it, I had to upgrade--to an iPhone! Now, really. What in the world do I need an iPhone for? I justified it to my husband by telling him it was an all-in-one and would be much easier for me to keep track of: I could stay in touch with him and the kids, listen to my music, check my email, text my girlfriends AND carry my photo album with me wherever I go! With all the apps available, I told him it would even serve to entertain the kids while we're waiting at the dr's office or restaurant....Yeah right, like I'm going to let them get their sticky fingers all over it.
Is there a 12 step program for people like us?

And if anything happens the cell phone retail store we can't even say I picked the phone while under the shower (the expression on their faces would be something). I can so totally relate to this love/hate relationship. In the beginning when I moved to Washington state I once got a call at 5 am during the weekend early morning (and my friend thought I was in Washington DC)..LOL. Thumbs up for a entertaining hub.
anna: I have had cell phones that met an unfortunate end as well. Once, my cat pushed my cell phone off a counter in the kitchen and - Bingo! Give the cat a stuffed teddy! It landed right in his water bowl where it marinated in until I found it. Obviously, the cat did it on purpose!
Good expose' of the love/hate relationship with cell phones that I'm sure most people feel, but few can articulate! Good job!
I pay for my sister, my mom, and I to have a cell phone plan through Verizon, but my sister's usage usually pushes the plan to 104 a month. It would be at 87 per month if she did not need to send picture texts, download ringtones, and call 411 so much. I do not mean to sound cheap, but the twenty dollar difference is a lot in this economy. My sister finally stopped downloading ringtones when I explained how much extra these were.
If feel so identified... Me too I love/hate my mobile. Husband threaten to cut me off a few months ago (he pays the bills and mine were sky high as I use mine even for international calls/texts on a daily basis) so I have stopped buying shoes to reduce my bills.... I must really love my mobile!
That's awesome. Since I got my cell, the only time I've been without it was when I was on a cruise with my family. Every time we got to a port I fired that puppy up and just waited for someone to call. My husband (boyfriend at the time) seemed to be psychic and managed to call within seconds of when I turned it on.

Feline Prophet-- I know that you are right, but it feels wrong. LOL! I do sometimes ignore that incessent ringing (or music) if I am really busy, but I still check to see who it is. It might be important. I need to break myself of a few bad habits where my cell phone is concerned.
You have my sympathies Anna! But take heart in the fact that you aren't alone, there are millions of others like you out there! I like to think my cellphone is for my convenience...and not for anyone else's...and I use it accordingly. If that means that I sometimes ignore a call from someone I don't want to talk to...so be it! :P

I was like that, totally addicted. It became too much.... then I cancelled my account and I have been cell phone free for 6 months and I feel great! I feel like I free woman! lol.....its not so bad. No one can get a hold of me until I want to get a hold of them and if its that bad they can call the house and leave a message on my machine. or they can Email me..... GREAT HUB!
Elena-- Yeah, I see that a lot!!! A couple of my friends would even text each other while they were in the same room with each other!!! It was silly, and pointless! I wish I could just set my phone to silent and forget about it! Truth is, I can't do that. It's how I keep in touch with my daughter when she is with her father, so it's a necessary evil!
Hi Anna! I bet a lot of people will identify with this love/hate relationship :-) I feel some parts, like not wanting to forget the thing at home on a work day, but I just leave it laying there all over the weekend! And you should see the amount of times I don't pick up, I just silence the thing and I'm a really happy camper!
I'm with you on the laws that have been necessary since the cell came about, but I hate it that the cell gets blamed because it's just the way people use it that's objectionable. I think it's one of these wonderful inventions that progress brings about, and I think it's a great tool, but it's how each of us uses it that creates a tiny bit of an issue there for me :-) Best example for me is: couple sitting at a table and instead of talking to each other both are just looking at their blueberries and talking or messaging somebody else! You see that a lot!

Hunter-- That is an interesting assignment. I hope he was a bit more specific than to just tell you not to use technology. An argument could be made that the very car you drove was technology. Most cars these days have high-tech sensors in them, GPS, and a variety of other features. I don't think I could last 24 hrs without technology. My phone is my lifeline.
